Light ticking noise coming from engine.
« on: September 22, 2006, 02:36:49 AM »
Hey guys. Just recenlty I've been getting this low ticking noise coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment. You can only hear it if the radio is off when you're in the car. When you're outside of the car, if I have the hood up I can hear it as well.

Any clues as to what it might be? The car drives perfectly fine and there isn't anything abnormal with it thus far. It's been ticking like this for the last few days.

- Fuel Injectors
- Valve Tick
- Could be a relay ticking due to ignition components being worn...happened to my neighbor

The infamous tick, glad I'm not the only one.

Is there a way to troubleshoot the third item you listed? This could very well be causing my tick, I wouldn't be surprised.

It has been coming from my cars, both of them all along.

For a short while after doing the COP conversion it seemed to almost go away.  My friend's E21 had a worn out relay & worn contact on his dizzy that caused the ticking noise (the worn contact somehow was ilke making it draw more current or something, making the relay tick).  I figured something in the ignition on mine had pooped (wires or coils).  The tick is back, and with a venegeance now.  I think it is from mid-weight oil and a quart of Rislone detergent.

kowalksi, also here on the forums and local to me, suggested it's probably sticky lifters. In the last two weeks I got my upper and lower oil pan gaskets replaced and had the mechanics put in 20w50 oil. I'm thinking it's because I put in the thicker oil as the car has been on 15w40 for the last 4 years from the previous owner.

It's probably my oil. Oh well, it's just damn annoying. lol.

On that note, I had them put in my new oem engine mounts today and wow what a difference. I was running on collapsed engine mounts since I got the car 6 months ago. The front end of the car vibrates a lot less now, sounds a lot better and shifting is even better :). Shifting got smoother after I put in the redline ATF but is not even better after replacing those engine mounts!

How much did you have to pay to have new engine mounts put on?  Is it DIY-able?  Is there aftermarket engine mount that is better than OEM or is OEM good? Thanks.

Labour was over an hour but under 2 hours. So probably around 1.5. I think the OEM ones dappen the vibrations the best. Any aftermarket ones are just going to make it vibrate a lot more :). There are pros and cons.
