Anyone know the angle of the M42?
« on: December 10, 2010, 04:51:05 PM »
Just wondering what angle the engine sits at in the engine bay. I searched but could not find it in any of the usual places. I am dropping an m42 into my 2002 and this angle measurement would help a lot in the fabbing of the engine mount brackets. let me know.
Thanks, Eric

30* Inclination to the right....

Thanks a lot. I guess this means that its tilted 30 degrees from where it would be sitting at a full 90 degrees. So this means that the engine should sit at 60 degrees when using the ground as a base of measurement, right?

I'll bet it doesn't have to be very close, a few degrees either way won't hurt one.  I had a 325 with a missing motor mount.  The plates were still there but the rubber biscuit had gone away.  The M20 is less slanted than our M42 IIRC, but it was a fair way way off.

Correct. 30* inclined to the right from 90*, so 60* angle.

No problem..I hope it works for you.

Though, curiously, one would think this info would be on the interweb somewhere. You aren't the first to drop an M42 into an 2002.

If it isn't well, then, always good to be first ;)

i put a m42 into my 77 e21. the M42 swap is actually pretty popular with the 2002/E21 groups.

i'm running a 3.91 diff and get 27 mpg. with the M10, k-jet injection, and a 3.64 diff, the best i could get was 19 mpg.

this is the engine that the 2002/E21 was meant to have.

it was easier to put a level on the oil pan than to gauge a 60° angle. i guess you could also attach an angle gauge to the top of the head.
