Rite Guys,

I have gone the route of getting the M20 Flywheel and Starter for my e30 m42 3.18is

Rite going through the getting this flywheel on I have striped everything off box old clutch and flywheel, now getting the m20 flywheel positioned and bolted on..... it turns about quarter way clockwise and anticlockwise and is catching on 2 bolts check pictures to see clearly which 2 are rubbing....

Has anybody come across this problem before and what have u guys done to resolve this.

I had same flywheel. After some machining and balancing it looks like this

weight ~5kg. I like it a lot

is there any other way apart from shaving more meat from the flywheel

and what is the 2 bolts Circular in Red responsible for???

I heard that someone put some kind of spacer and it was from automatic transmission flywheel. http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/2-doors/Europe/320i-M20/LHD/A/browse/engine/twin_mass_flywheel/

As I remember bolts are to hold sump on the engine block.

You need to mill the rear off or space it out. I'd recommend the former.

That looks like a 325e flywheel. I would also agree with KenCopperwheat and mill it down.

You eighter need to machine your flywheel or get the one like in the pic.

Getting it milled down only ran me $60 when I did the swap, and it was worth it for the extra 5 lbs that they took off.

Dont listen to any previous posts about milling it more unless thats what you want to do. Ive had this swap for years and researched it to the end of the Earth before I did it.

Take a belt sander or a grinder to the metal and shave off the area where the flywheel rubs on it just enough to it doesnt touch it. Youd be surprised how little you actually have to take off.

You guys are making this a lot more complicated than necessary.

Look at the stock M42 flywheel. Notice the little spacer ring that is held on with 2 rivets. Drill out the 2 rivets. Put the spacer between the M20 flywheel & crank. Problem solved. I have been running this setup for almost 6 years now.

Also, no1_jazz that does not look like a M20B25 flywheel. Are you sure it came from a 1988+ 325i? The earlier / 325e ones don't really fit too well (which may be part of your problem).

Here's the M20 Flywheel I installed two weeks ago. Next to it is the M42 Dual Mass flywheel it replaced.
