PNW: What are you doing to your car today?
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:35:59 PM »
Hey since many of us in the seattle area are snowed in (don't laugh at 3" of snow) by the fierce storm happening ... What work have you got planned on your car?  I know I'm taking the opportunity to do some much needed maintenance myself.

Things are working out in this order:

1.  Removing the driveline & r/r guibo
2.  Shifter bushing refresh
3.  Front crankshaft seal replacement
4.  Mess under the intake

So much to do and so little time in the garage without a snow day!

Well I'm planning on:

1. Fix my current exhaust banging issue
2. $25 keyless entry install
3. New tires

And for when it's sitting before I get out for summer:
1. Remove intake and clean it out
2. Clean MAF
3. Mess under the intake
4. Ebay Chip
5. Remove upper and lower oil pans to replace gaskets (Leak, please be gone!)

I'll also be hoping to get a COP kit soon, because my wires are pretty much shot.

Work?  I'm driving the kids to karate.  What else is one of these good for?  Actually, she needs a bit of a break.  In the last month we've been to Charlotte, NC; Williamsport, PA; and Lancaster, PA.  Well over a thousand miles in all.  She didn't miss a beat, and averaged well over 34 mpg.

I was planning on a front suspension refresh and an e36 rack.  Just have to find a cheap one.  Then I'll likely be adjusting the parking brake (again) and shoveling snow.

@ ralph - That's an awesome list!  I wish I were half the mechanic of most on here ...

@ Dave - I hear you on the time ... with the wife in Grad School and me working on my PhD so little time is left for cars with all the familly stuff.

@ Andy -  I am sure I have the same leak issue ... mine was missing a bolt from the inside upper pan and it wasn't in the lower pan when I pulled it!  I don't think the PO knew how to remove the dipstick tube and that bolt hole was close to stripped.  I went to the local hardware store and picked up some M6 x 20 bolts which seemed to cure the problem.  I'm hoping the upper pan isnt the cause of my leak ... I know that the front crank shaft seal is leaking ...

It works well with only two little issues.  I've never been able to decel.  Set/cancel and accel all work just fine.  On occasion the belt slips out of the clip.  I've been able to re-thread it on the road but it's a PITA.  It'll do until I can scrounge another unit or take it apart to see what's broken.
I have an oil leak too, but it's on the rear chain case gasket.  I might as well swap in a new motor and overhaul this one while I'm at it - that gasket is a huge PITA to get at.
