Flooding, no start
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:56:26 PM »
Okay here is the story. I a 1992 318I I bought it about 6 years ago with the engine locked up. I rebuilt the engine ran it for about 40000 miles and a timing guide broke, jumped time and bent valves. I tore it down 2 years ago, just never had the time to fix it. My daughter is going to be driving in the spring so I decided to put this back together for her. Got everything back together and it will not start. It will almost start just won't plugs are soaked in gas. I have spark, compression, fuel pressure. Anyone get any ideals?

Stomp test, check the DME for water damage, compression or leakdown test.

Sounds like you've been over this territory before.  Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, it's always easier to eliminate the easy stuff before getting into less-likely problems.

Have you had the injectors tested?  One stuck open can stop the car from running.  A really bad vacuum leak likewise.  I'd suspect a stuck-closed idle air valve could do that too.

I'd also check the resistance of the most important sensors.  Cam sensor  is important for spark timing, coolant temp sensor, AFM door sensor  & intake air temp sensor for cold starts.  The DME will run far too  rich on cold start if the coolant or air temp sensors are inaccurate.

IIRC, the '93 has EWS. Swapping the DME might not really get at the problem in that case, unless you've disabled it already. That's out of my expertise to troubleshoot.  Do you have any idea if it's functional?  I'd assume that if you have spark it's working, but I'm not 100% on that. Sorry that I'm not on more solid ground with e36's, I have an e30.

I've check the sensors. I have not checked the IAC valve. I was going to pull the injectors out and have a look next. I figure I'm going find some little critter made a nest in something or chewed something up. It might be the weekend before I get back on it.

i guess you could try to create a decent vacuum leak to allow more air into the engine, just to see if it'll start and then work from there. I had larger injectors with a massive vacuum leak and it did start, but without the leaks, it won't idle.

just a thought

Ok I finally got time to work on this thing. Found 2 injectors leaking bad, guess sitting for 2 years got to them. Changed them them it still wouldn't start now I had backfiring through the intake. So to make a long story short  most of the plug wire were crossed up. Here the funny part when I took it apart I tagged the wires and left them in the plastic housing just laid them aside. So it appears they were crossed up on the coil end that I did not have apart, so I'm going to blame it on the ex wife I through out about a month before it quit.

It's running?  Great!  Good that you're sorting things out.

I blame my wife for everything too.  More likely I'd be the one getting tossed out...
