Hey all,

I am in Seattle, WA and looking for a suitable flywheel for the swap. I'm not too picky. I will take any single mass flywheel for an M20 (325i, 325e, 528e, ...) I really want the 18 lbs flywheel that everyone talks about, but I can make the 24 lbs one work, or even a lightened one.

I thought all M20's used the same basic flywheel (just with a different tooth pitch pre-88). You'll need the matching starter gear for it to work with an earlier model.

Damn.. so theoretically since its off an eta i would have to get the starter off that car then? ... and thats even if it'l fit right?

because i don't want to mess with changing starter gear.
Grrr.. if so looks like im back on the market for a 325i flywheel..

It's not theoretical at all...the early ring gear teeth are different than the later ones. You can replace that ring, but it's cheaper to get a late model 325is one. You might also look for the Valeo single-mass kit, has all the stuff you'll need. Not sure when they'll release it, but it can't be long.

So I'd suspect you could take any early starter and it'd fit.

I haven't run across anyone using the pre-86 325e flywheel. Everyone I've seen uses the 325i or the lighter 323i flywheel (there's one for sale on r3vlimited). Both take the 325i clutch set but you must use the 323i throw-out bearing. You can swap in the whole 325i starter, swap the starter gear or swap the flywheel ring gear. The whole starter is easier, just more $.

I have the coveted m40 single mass flywheel which is only 1lb heavier than the m20 conversion with all things considered (flywheel, clutch disc & pressure plate). It comes with the matching clutch and the benefit is you can use your existing starter motor - no need to find an m20 starter motor & swap pinion gears and all that jazz. I can also resurface it for you if you would like to put on a new clutch.
