318is 1.9 - swap for m52?
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:07:11 PM »
Im new to this forum so would just like to ask a few questions. I have a 1997 318is (1.9) and I'm considering changing the engine for an m52 (2.8) engine, as on the surface, it seems like a relatively cheap way to gain alot more power as opposed to adding turbos and so on. Would this be possible in terms of size etc?

If so, would it be compatiable with my existing gearbox and everything else to provide an almost 'plug and play' solution?

If not, what would be the things that I'd need to change to enable this to actually work?

I have searched this forum and havent found anything as specific as this.

Thanks in advance.

The M52 came in E36's so yes it will fit no problem.

The Getrag 250 used in 318 and 325 models of the E36 era will bolt up to M52 blocks, but are a bit weaker than the ZF used on 328 and M3 models.

You'll want to swap differentials as well, which means driveshaft, axles, and diff itself.

Obviously you will need the wiring harness and ECU from the M52 as well.

Basically, keep the 318 as a 318. Going out and buying a 328 would be way easier, and cost less for the same thing. Only difference is, it was done by the boys in Munich, so you know it is right.

If you want more power, keep the M44, and turbo or supercharge it.

Thanks for the response Hodge.

It terms of ease of fitting and maintenance, which would be a more viable option between a supercharger and a turbo charger?

What kind of prices am I looking at for each? I can see a DASC is ~$3,500. How much would a turbo conversion be roughly?

If I was to fit a turbo/DASC, are there any other parts that must definitely be changed to accomodate the additional power etc?

Those are definitely alot of questions but let me tell you this:

The DASC install was relatively easy. Took about a week for me (not straight an hour here an hour there). Probably 8-10 hours overall. I have had to relocate a few things such as the RRFPR since the location they have you place it in kept causing a bolt to snap due to heat from the valve cover.

For a turbo setup, it really depends on what you are willing to spend. The DASC IMO is a good way to get your foot in the door and moderately upgrade further after that on a stock engine. With Turbo the temptation to get above 10psi would be too great to leave the engine alone, so add that into cost. Also note, there are no real options for M42 turbo manifolds out there.

With DASC, you won't gain too much power so leaving the stock clutch for awhile to see how it holds will be fine. Everything else should be fine as well, given they are in good shape.

As for exhaust, I actually went from a custom setup, back to OEM because not only was it too loud and droning, I actually gained torque back with the stock system.
