Wheel bearing causing breaking issues?
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:35:44 PM »
Ive been having issues with vibrations in my front end. I recently replaced the ball joints and it cleared most of the issue up. There was still a slight vibration at some points in driving so I assume the wheel bearings need to be replaced too. Well yesterday I was driving down the road and the front end began to shake horribly and then I lost my brakes. Could a bad wheel bearing cause my breaks to malfunction?

In a situation where the bearing is in absolutely terrible shape, yes. The hub will tilt after the bearing fails and the rotor will tilt with it effectively orienting it diagonally in the caliper. The caliper will not function this way and if you keep driving the fluid will boil. It happens to Subarus at the track a lot.

does your abs light show up? mine is starting to act the same. when the abs light doesn't show up and i'm braking to a complete stop, you can feel the brake making a clucking noise. like it is not stable. when the abs light is on it doesn't make that noise or feel like it. how do you know when a bearing is bad?
