Throttle body option
« on: July 31, 2010, 11:32:42 AM »
Hello, I wasn't sure where to post this so i hope this is the right section.
When working on a friends car, i have noticed, that the 2,9 Ford V6, used in European Sierras and Scorpios uses an dual intake plenum and throttle body, so i sourced me one, and took some measurments. The maximum diamater of the TB is 55mm, whereas the diameter of the flap is about 38mm, but it can be bored out as there is enough material on the walls.
The Euro M3 E36 uses 45mm bore which can be achieved pretty easy here.
My plan is to use the lover intake section from the E30 M42 and fit two of these throttle bodies. From the measurements that I've gotten from B318M42W (Thank you very much for that!) The spacing on the intake is about 72mm as on the throttle body its 76mm, also the intake plenum holes are about 43,18mm. So my plan is to instal a shim in the throttle body output and rebore it to 45mm, and port match the intake to it.
Well here are some pics of the throttle body, they can be aquired for about 50USD here in preally good condition, the pictured one is my first one used for measuring. I think it can make an really cheap alternative not exceeding 300bucks in the final...
Mounted on engine:

My piece dissasembled:

The center journal is for both intakes, so i asume i would use it for idling, and on the right side, you can see another journal, which is only for one barrel, that one i want to use for the brake servo.

Oh yeah i tottally forgot, I want to use two, for an ITB conversion, to make it clear.
I think for a single TB the original one is pretty sufficient, and when not a rebore helps, for anything more serious, you'd have to make all new intake anyway. Cosworth BOA/BOB ones are also pretty similar to ther BMW one, and should be a tad bigger...
