Jesus Christ.....Not Another One......Yep

This time it's on my car. I am soooooo tired of this crap.

Short story. Sunday the batt light came on. Which of course usually means alternator. Not this time.

However, when I turn the key to ON, I only get the batt light. No other idiot lights. And my tach, temp and fuel are no longer functioning.

Car runs and charges fine.

SI Batteries?

+1  That's more or less exactly what mine did, only difference being my fuel gauge still worked.

Gah.  You need a break to get working on that M3.  Speaking of that, my VIN plan failed; I can't help you out in any (economical) way...but I'll let you know if anything promising develops.

Well it seems my Alt is now acting up. When I start the car my voltage is at 12v. But when I blip the throttle the voltage comes up and stays up and doesn't drop.

I know that on older VW's when the cluster has a problem the Alt will typically start acting up.

Does this hold true for the E30?

IDK what the BMW runs at specifically, but a healthy one should see 12v idle and more like 13.5 higher up.  Voltage is sometimes dependent on load...or battery condition...makes troubleshooting more difficult.

I'm having a similar issue...now pulling my hair out with a '95 Jetta III that won't hold a charge.  I bought BMWs to get away from VWs...must be some bad karma, eh?

Voltage regulator?  What is the voltage of the battery when you shut down?

12v.

I'm pretty sure it's the SI Batt, but I am tied up with the M3 right now. And I am starting to get sick. This week is going to suck.

Well, i'm back after a month long hiatus.

It's not the SI batteries. I swapped out several clusters from 318's, 325's and the M. I used the correct coding plug each time. No dice.

So, I don't know if you guys have seen section 6210 in the ETM for our cars, but the diagram seems to be lacking the attached wires from the blue, yellow and white harness. If I am reading it right, all that is show are the light bulbs for the blinkers, idiot lights, SI the main board and all associated.

So I am trying to figure out which wires in the blue and white harness are what. The yellow harness is useless and unnecessary for my setup. It is disconnected and has been for months.
