Advice on a newer BMW
« on: July 18, 2010, 09:49:24 AM »
I'm looking to retire my 'is from dd duty in the next year or so, and I'd like to get a newer, more comfortable bimmer. I still want it to be fun, fast and handle like mad. Looking at spending about $8k.

Thinking a 00-02ish 330i would fit the bill.

All input is very much appreciated, as I have not had the chance to drive or even ride in many newer BMWs.

I'd say a '97 to '99-ish low mileage M3 would fit the bill.  The 330i is nearly as fast but the M3 has a better suspension package and it's a little lighter.

Thanks. I don't need a demon, but the m3 is always tempting. That "almost" part is why I was eyeballing a 330i. If I'm not mistaken, that's some overlooked potential, and hopefully can be found at a deal a little easier.

If you're looking for a more "comfortable" ride, go with the e46 330i. It's an all around good car, and it's comfortable for a daily. Maintenance shouldn't be too bad either.

If you could find one, I'd say go for a 330xi. I hear they are actually more quick, and the e46 AWD systems are awesome.

e36 m3. the US one is not a demon, the "demon" is only the m3 we have here in europe with the euro engine :)

but as you say comfortable, e46 330i stock should be nice.

the 330xi awd system was piss poor. it uses fixed ratios unlike the e9x which have a variable awd that can give u up to a 20/80 distribution. iirc the e46 is locked at some 40/60 at all times. unless ur looking at zhp i wouldnt mess with the 330i. i think a 99 m3 might be a better fit. and ur subframe wont fall out lol.
op i wouldnt even look at an e46 unless its post 04. anything before was just terrible and riddled with problems
