Brakes = Fail
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:16:32 AM »
So I'm driving along and my brake fluid warning comes on.  Strange but maybe just from pads wearing.  So I fill it and keep going.  Then I notice my brake pedal travel keeps getting longer and longer til I'm almost to the floor before the brakes kick in.  Turns out the fluid was low AGAIN and air had got into the system.  So I bleed it out and searched for a leak.  I looked at all four calipers and the master cylinder and found nothing.  And there were no puddles on the ground.  So filled it up again, and this time i pushed the pedal hard and then it gave way.  Huge puddle near the rear diff.  What did I find?  Hard lines rusted into oblivion.  No rust on the whole car except for those hard brake lines.

Ordered hard lines from work and flexible lines from UUC.  Got the old hard lines out, not too bad except for where they were rusted and I basically had to cut them out.  As soon as the new lines get in I'll have to bend them to match.

Bottom line tho... NOT a fun job :-p  Pics to come soon.

That blows.  I've had to form hard lines before and it ain't easy.  I'm really hoping my little car can survive Germany long enough to get back to CA and safety so I don't have to deal with rust...

I never minded making my own hard lines. I just hate bubble flares. Anyone know what the flare is on e30 brake and fuel lines?

Another peace of mind project under your belt, Blue. Hope it goes well.

The lines I got from the dealer game with flares and fittings on them already.  Just not bent.  I should be working on it tomorrow night.

With the right tubing bender, it won't be bad at all.

That's the way I did it too.

HF has some good, cheap benders...
