OK, so after swapping out my clutch last year, the damned rear main seal is leaking, even though I put a new one in when I did it. Since I have to go back in anyway, any recommendations on a lightweight flywheel for a daily driver/non-track car?

Thoughts from people who have done the swap?

I'm not inclined to do the M20 flywheel conversion, I'd rather have something designed to work with the existing clutch and other parts.

euro single-mass flywheel is about the same weight as the M20 flywheel (roughly 20lbs less IIRC).

Thanks - I just saw the M20 conversion kit that tglaze has at DTMotorsports, I may go that route... I'm also trying to chase a leak from the timing case area that I thought I had fixed. I *really* don't want to take all of that apart again to replace the gaskets.

i have a jb racing and am pretty happy with it. it chatters a little after extensive driving tho

I chose to replace with a stock flywheel on my DD for easier even idle. If I was racin' I would go for lighter.

If you don't want to go M20, then the Euro 323 is out of the question too as it is much lighter as is the JB racing. They also make it more difficult to drive and they are noisy when you are stopped and the clutch pedal is up.

The only recommendation I could give you would be the M42 Single mass for non-AC cars. It's lighter and probably makes a little noise. But nothing like the Euro 323 at 11.9lbs would be.

i have a m42 single mass flywheel and spec stage-2 clutch waiting to go in.

i'll report results here once they're installed.

I have had my M20 lightened flywheel with M20 clutch in my car for 4 years with no ill effects. There is no idle issue or loud chatter. Mine weighed in at 10.75lbs I would definitely recommend it because it really wakes the car up along with a JC or Mark D chip.

Thank you Warsteiner, just what I was hoping to hear. Are you happy with the stock M20 clutch? I was thinking of going a little heavier than stock, but I'm not sure if the m20 clutch already is or not.

Has anyone talked to Todd about whether his m20 fly/clutch kit is still available? Nothing on the site that I could find... dynotechonline.com (no affiliation)

I'm not sure if there is a heavy duty clutch kit.:rolleyes:

Either way.. you won't get the same amount of torque unless your going stroker motor and then again it would be perfect anyway.

Todd ran out of M20 flywheels the last time I talked with him. I know that I have a few that I was lightening and getting rid of. I have a few people in line... I didn't forget about you who sent me a message, I just haven't had the time to get to do them. I do have another brand new clutch kit available too.

A 323i flywheel that's lightened to about 14lbs is going to be great. Pair it with a chip and you won't be disappointed. I loved the setup quite a bit and it did NOT make it anymore difficult to drive...in fact I'd say it made it much better and more enjoyable.
