Does anyone have any pics they could post or point me to of what new timing chain sprockets look like and also what badly worn sprockets would look like? I've seen a few that are described as "pointy", but not sure if that is an acceptable condition.

if theres no small flat spot on top of the sprockets, then its worn. if it sounds like a diesel, somethings not right, if it sounds like a diesel and has pointy sprockets, it time for timing case overhaul ie: NEW sprocketS (cams and crank), NEW chain. and NEW guide rails, NEW chain tensioner (if not done recently). will set you back about 500-700$, depending where you get your parts.

Mine are due for replacement. They are pointy Sharp but not noisy yet. I noticed that there is like an idlers sprocket near the crank sprocket? Should that be replaced as well?

The idler doesn't usually wear much. How's it look? Bearings in good shape?

FYI: The crank sprocket is pointy when new. Mine had 150k+ and still looked brand new when compared to a new sprocket.

You don't necessarily need to replace the guides when replacing the cam gears. If they're the newer, all plastic ones, and look ok then you're good to go. If they're the oe stamped steel with plastic surfaces, then replace them asap.
