E30 M3 rack in 318is
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:09:04 AM »
Quick question - I know most guys go for the E36 rack but I want to stick with E30 parts and not mess with the steering column.  Just a person preference - not knocking it.  Plus the M3 rack is about $750 vs 600 for the regular E30 part so I figure I lose that much in frustration.

Question is, realoem lists a different power steering pump for the M3 as well as a different rack to pump high pressure hose - so, which high pressure hose do I use or will I just end up finding out that neither of them fit?

Cheers.

Plans for the summer: complete steering rebuild - new rack, tie rods, power steering lines, reservior and steering column u-joint/flex disc.

It will cost much more to source and maintain any 'M' parts than any stock level e30 or e36 parts. All of the steering system is different because of the chassis' being different and the different engines (m42 vs s14). I believe the m42 pump will power the m3 rack but I can't say if the hoses work. Probably would if the racks are the same brand only different ratios.

well i was in the market for an M3 pump about a year ago and from everything i read about it, it was a direct bolt up all u need to do was bend one of the hoses a little more (heat and bend) so im not completely sure...

The difference in pumps is probably due to the M3 pump taking a different pulley.  You'll be fine with your M42 pump.
