A bit of wisdom

Hey, I thought I'd share something that happened to me not long ago. I'm a track addict and, although I don't usually drive fast on public roads, I do enjoy practising my lines on onramps and offramps on the highway. Well one night, I came in a little too fast, my tires were worned and the pavement was slippery. The tail lost grip and I countersteered, drifting for a good 10-15 meters, then the front lost grip and we did 180, hit the curb and rolled a few times. My friend and I were unhurt, beside a very large scare on my head as I poped my sunroof open. Having done this in anything other then an E30, I probably wouldn't be writing this. The reason I'm writing this is I know how fun it is to do some spirited driving but what happens on the track should stay on the track because on the road, you never know what's going to happen, too many variables, other people who haven't signed a waiver. And I've heard many times that doing track time makes you less reckless on the street...it's true...but it also gives you a false confidence on your abilities. I'm almost signed off to do solo, so I can hold my own on the track...but there are some things you can't control....anyway, I just thought I'd share this with you guys since I know some of you go out on the track and I am certain most of you like to do spirited driving...which is okay...to a certain extent.

Wow sorry to hear abotu it, but glad you walked away.

That is exactly what happened to me when I crashed my first 318is.  Lost the rear...corrected and snapped the front loose....up a curb, up a levee all while rotating and finally into a tree (hit it still going 50-60mph I would guess), facing the opposite direction I started from.  Again, my buddy & I walked away with little more than sore necks...the E30 is a tank.

All in all, I would say this is a good experience though (it was for me in retrospect).  All the cockiness from never having so much as a fender bender in 6 years of driving melted away instantly, and my driving has been far safer ever since...I save it for autoX.

I saw the car half an hour ago...oh boy it's dead. I'll get it towed to my friend's garage tommorrow, I'll have pics too. When I saw my window I wondered how the hell I crawled out of there...being 6 feet 1 and weighing 200 lbs. Anyway, I hope my experience (and yours bmwman91) makes other people think before they have to go through it themselves..and might not be as lucky as us.

Wow, real sorry about the loss. It's unfortunate since as you said, you reserve most of your spirited driving on the tracks.
