Problem with Dbilas ITB

Hi, guys, am working on Lotus 7 project with m42 engine. Last year I was using engine from 318ti and it worked pretty well but than I have destoyed it, this year I'm using engine from 318is with Dbilas ITB and a lighter fly wheel, the problem I have with this engine is that it runs much worse than the stock engine from 318ti, above 5.800rpm it goes very good but untill that its worse than stock. My idea is that the desing of the "air box" of dbilas itb is not good. Otherwise I really dont know where can be the problem. Any suggestions? It would help me a lot, thx

I Don't have a answer for you, But i've always wanted to build a Lotus 7 and have always also had the intent on placing a m42 under its bonnet :P Props on a great build!

i am using the dbilas setup with motronic and have no issues; there is nothing wrong with their plenum design.

the first thing i would try is orienting the air flow meter properly. what you have pointing towards the driver's side fender is supposed to be facing downward. rotate it 90 degrees and see if that's the issue, if not, let us know and we'll see what we can figure out.

I have just installed a Dbilas set up this weekend. Though only run for a short while the car appears to run well on the standard software and exibits no power loss down though not dyno proven.

I understand your concern for the plenum chamber as it does not "look" optimal when compared to the likes of an M3 however I intend to prove it is either good or bad via some CFD analysis and compare it to a optimised version which should bolt on. Will let you know how i go.

Im guessing your CFD results will show a poor distribution to the first 2 cylinders. An Ideal situation would be to have an inlet at the front of the plenum, this minimizes the direction change needed for the air.

The question really is are the ITB's  worth it, compared to say an m50 swap for similar $$?

ot Itb's paired with cams?

I'd like to see your analysis as well.

I know that users here have dbilas with no problems, but I just can't figure out what is the problem with mine, the itb is a quite simple construction and I have checked all parts, it should work fine. I have bouth it already installed with the engine so that why am not using parts from m50 or so.

I will try to turn it 90 degrees and will see if that had any effect.

While I was in Czech Republic my father was driving it on a circuit and destroyed the engine. Thers a whole in one piston and one piston hit the spark plug so we have to start again. I not sure what exactly happned and what was the cause of this. We have a spare m42 engine so probably we will change it completly

Nice project you got there, what is the kit based around? did you have to modify the sump to get it to fit??

Theres a  firm in the UK doing these kits for like yours for M42/4s and S50 motors

Hi guys, I'm new here..Quite a late starter into the M42 but hell do i learn alot rebuilding my 17yr old girl! Anyhow, can anyone share with me the Gains/experience felt with the DBilas ITBs over the stock? I'm on the verge of getting one me self:D

If you can get ITBs for a good price, then get them. They seldom come up for less than retail $, and you can always resell them.

However, ITBs alone won't really make much hp but they will make for a more responsive engine.
