Email restrictions. simply stupid
« on: May 17, 2010, 01:50:31 AM »
My friend can't join because free email accounts are blocked. Not everyone works in the computer industry or is a student at a private college. What were you thinking??? There are better ways to block bot registration, like custom questions (i.e. what comes after E21). I'm sure theres at least 50 people who didn't register for this site because of this. Some of them could of been quality contributors (not like me).

This is why I recommended member validation. But it's not my site, nor my rules.

I just wish the forum email notifications worked again.  If it's a question of hosting and/or assistance, I'll gladly help -- I may be a car noob but I've been setting up web and email servers for years.

Agreed, it took me almost two years before I was able to gain access to an email account that would fly. Can't imagine how many people just walked away. Custom questions is a great idea. Not like the email blocking has stopped the spam...

They need to read the market better. If they sold mtech pattern wallets, they might have a better shot at selling their junk on here.

Thanks for the hard work, we might bitch, but we do love our niche here. It's appreciated.

easiest/best way to rid of spam is to make all new users require comment approval for their first 2 posts.
or just make a bunch of us mods. spam will be deleted and posts might actually be moved to the correct threads

Keep in mind, it costs $, time, we have jobs, and work doing other things. Sheepdog is working on this. He hates the spam like we do.....

I feel a 1 word reply, is just a means to adding a post count. And not fully understanding the problem.

Matt-B, allow me to apologize. I'm speaking from frustration at not being able to join this community for a very long time. I appreciate everything that you guys work constantly to provide us with. My "+1" was for the idea, not knocking any of the efforts that are undertaken here currently.

Would it be helpful to have a few more mods? I'm sure there are more than a few dedicated gents on here who would be more than willing.

Think so?
I have done that before, it didn't work.

On my other site, I have 12 people on staff.
As a group they perform 60+ moderations per day. Do you really want to add cleaning up 500 spam posts as well? No, I cannot have 60 people running around with access to the inner workings of a website.

Sorry, but it's not difficult to find a free email host you can use here. Two allowed ones have big names on the internet. Besides that, almost every internet provider gives you 5 free email accounts. This is what I encourage people to use.

As for the two posts, that is great in theory, but I have seen spammers put up 50 spam at a time, with 30 different accounts all in about 10 minutes. Sure with your idea, those posts wouldn't be seen, but it slows down the site and creates a mess for the staff to clean up.

It's not just spammers you have to worry about either. You would be amazed at the trolls it keeps out too. Moderation on my other board dropped by 70% when I enacted this systems. Yes it hurt registration some, but not much.

Would there be an easy way for people who are valid contributors to be allowed to invite others? That would have been helpful to me before I was able to register.

Thank you, sheepdog, for all the work you put in here. It's become my most valuable resource of late.
