318i M42 TURBO KIT
« on: May 03, 2010, 10:56:25 PM »
Hello M42 enthusiasts! Me and a friend of mine are thinking of developing a bolt on turbo kit for the 318i M42 engine. Just something mild in the range of 200 RWHP ~7-8psi of boost using stock engine internals. We plan on selling a kit or two and were wondering if anyone out there would be willing to purchase one. The kit will be tested on my own 318i which has 113,000 miles on the engine. Price range is still up in the air but we're thinking somewhere in the range of $2,900. Please let us know what you think! Price offers are appreciated too.

The turbo we're using will be a t25 flange based turbo to help encourage an early spool. We will use quality parts not cheap ebay kit parts.

I think $2900 seems pretty steep. At that price many of us would already be running the Delta Atlantic S/C. Several guys have scabbed setups together for around $1000- I think a well thought out, clean, bolt on 6-7 psi setup would be in demand at $2000.

I agree, all of us want turbos, but only a few of us have the bucks to back it up.  Heck some of us are scraping to keep our little cars running! :D

OK. Good feedback. We might be able to drop the price to around $2000 but the turbo won't be as good because most of the cost resides in the turbo itself.

Why don't you make a "modular kit", with different options that let the buyer choice where he want to save money.

Eg: turbo: buyer can choose chinese or real garrett, IW or EW
fuel tuning: he can choose between rrfpr until 7psi or full MS ecu with big injectors
intake: different types of intakes.
intercooler: small & cheap or big & pricey
manifold: cheap for internal WG, more pricey for external WG...

Many kid here are cheap and don't care about quality if it's cheap and it works(they don't care for how long :D)

Sorry, wich manifold you'll use? Are you still sure about T25 flange? Look that my T3 fully spooled @3000 ;)

trying to make money off the m42 crowd with such a big-ticket item is a mistake, IMO.

as has been already said, most of these kids are scraping together cash just to keep the car running.

in a different situation i -might- buy at a $2000 price point, but i've already pieced together manifold, turbo, wastegate, etc already.

if you want to make money, design and produce a good M42 turbo manifold for less than 666fab does, sell that, and let people do the rest for themselves.

but be warned, otis (good & tight) tried that angle with a run of 10 manifolds and ended up pretty frustrated by the experience of having a bunch of people saying "yeah i want one!" and then when he had them ready to sell everyone disappeared.

i managed to benefit from that when he wanted to dump stock- got a ceramic-coated M42 turbo manifold for $400 because he just wanted them gone.

believe me, i've thought about how to produce parts to release to this crowd as well, but every transaction i've gone through with an e30/m42 owner lately has made me think there are better ways to invest my money.

Does he still make manifolds? I'm looking for a m42 manifold without having to pay up to over $1000 AU for one from 666fab.

Agreed.  It's a great concept, but very few will have the budget to pull it all together at once.

I remember meeting a R3VLIMITED forum member at the track one time.  Great guy who had seen the car online and was working on getting his own E30 running.  I spotted him as a R3VLIMITED member when he rode up on his skateboard.

if you want a cheaper option, contact todd at dynotech http://www.dynotechonline.com/store/index.php?main_page=contact_us and see if he still has any of the log-style manis.
