Anyone driven a 318is that has all 136 horses?
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:25:00 PM »
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has driven a m42 e30 318is coupe or has one currently. 5 speed of course. (that has good clean power)

Ive just been wondering and would like to know if anyone would ever let another person drive it to get a feel of what the m42 really can do.

My car feels nice and quick sometimes, and at other times feels slow and laggy. Ive got some maintenance i want to get done, but I want to know what a well maintained or restored or even a modded 318is coupe feels like. Ive been told it can keep up with our 6 pot brothers for the most part.

I wish someone would drive my car and give me some feedback on how it feels, power wise, clutch wise etc..

Im sure others are in the same boat?

I feel that mine runs pretty close to perfect all the time.  Cold start, warm running, even hot running after a long day of driving, it all seems great!  If coaxed properly and shifted good, it keeps up with a lot of things :D

I've got plenty more than 136. The only issue I have with mine is that the cams are so heavy that occasionally after deceleration, it want's to shut off. But that is the nature of the cams.

And yes, a properly driven stock 318 can almost hang with the 325. Although we make less power, aside from the heavy flywheel, the M42 makes power much more efficiently due to the primitive motor design of the M20.

No pulls yet. I'm thinking 180 wheel easily. Have you seen my build thread.

For $350, hell yes. It spins like a raped ape up top. The 323 FW helps though.

Mine is definitely running at full power. I have about 800miles on a fresh rebuild (honed, rings, bearings), a 13lb 323i flyhweel, mustang injectors, no clutchfan, COP.

I'd love to drive an E30 and a good E36 to compare to mine, after 178k I'd imagine its not so close to 136/140 bhp

You can easily see over 150BHP at the flywheel with a chip / remap.

It';s common knowledge, over here at least, that M42's make over the factory 136 and more into the mid 140's.

You can see 165+ with a full hi-flow exhaust and remap.

Big Bore throttle bodies and K&N filters apparently do nothing.

It's exhaust and ECU then you;re in to forced induction, cams, ITB etc etc.
