Picked up my 91 318i parts car tonight
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:50:58 PM »
I bought a 91 318i 4 door M42 tonight, it had been hit hard on the passenger side, front fender and door are toast.  Rob Torres (owner of 2002 Haus in San Luis Obispo) and I went went to go see the car.  We jumped it and it fired right up.  The door frame was bent outward by the impact and a huge yellow jacket nest had been in the car.  This 318i had been sitting for 15 months.  At least the owner got rid of the yellow jacket nest a couple of weeks ago.  We brought an air tank with us and put some air in the tires.  It has Dec 05 stickers on it, I called my insurance company and got one day insurance and we drove the car to Rob's shop in SLO from Santa Margarita, about 15 miles. The 318i ran great, pulled strong. Sucks that this car got hit,  I was just hoping I wouldn't be pulled over for no registration (other than the title) and numerous cracks in the windshield.

It is a parts car for sure, motor only has 94.8K on the car, it's a local car bought at the BMW dealer in SLO.  The roof is slightly buckled by the impact.  I bought it for $450

I'm going to start parting it on Friday, Rob Torres is getting the engine and gearbox.  This 318i has fog lamps in the front valence, my  318i doesn't so the valance will be painted black to go on my 318i.

Since I have a 91 E30 318i as well, I don't know what I'll be keeping and selling.  Front and rear clip are good and drivers side doors are also good.

Woo-Hoo!!!

Having a parts car is great.  Loosing mine because of no storage space.

4 door M42's don't exist. The 318iS M42 has only been made in the coupe version. Maybe the 1.8 M40 engine has been changed with the M42 one.

91 was the only year that E30 318i M42 4 door was produced for the US market.  Take a look at your owners manual if you own a 91 E30.

They are a great buy, usually hundreds of dollars less than a 2 door 318is.

The guys above are right.  The 1991 US market 318i has the M42 engine.  All 1991 318 models in the US have the M42 and the 1992 318i convertible has the M42 as well.  In most of the world, the 1991 318i doesn't have the same engine as the 1991 318is.

yup never had it here...first was the four-cylinder m10, the s14 from the e30 m3 and then the m42.
