My E30 318iS Ownership Cost Analysis [DATA]
« on: April 13, 2010, 04:11:40 PM »
EDITED: Forgot I bought it in 2005 rather than 2006 lol.  Data updated.

A few days ago I made an account on MPGTune.com.  For years I have kept a notebook in my glovebox in which I keep all of my mileage & maintenance history.  It took a few hours, but I put it all into the MPGTune database.

See here for the car's history.
http://mpgtune.com/vehicleDetails.php?carId=4787

Anyway, I exported the data to Excel & started going overboard with it.  I added in stuff like purchase price & insurance costs to go with the maintenance & gas costs accounted for by the online thing.  If you have an account, you can actually see a lot more than what you get in the link...you can input maintenance items and select a date range for the mileage.

The stuff below is calculated using the duration of my ownership to compute totals & averages.  I figure that this probably comes close to what the average, well-maintained E30 costs to own.  I drive a bit less than most working folks these days since I bike to work every day, but 12k miles per year on one vehicle is probably around average.

Driving & Spending Totals Since 10/2005:
Miles Driven: 57517
Gallons of Gas: 2086 (57515 miles / 27.7 avg MPG)

Purchase price: $2000
Maintenance & Mod Spending: $6088
Insurance Premiums: $4141
Gas purchases: $6427
TOTAL Car Cost: $18656

Ignoring gas & insurance (usual recurring costs), the car has cost me $8088 in maintenance & mods plus the purchase price.

Statistics
I typically drive 1064 miles per month.  My average gas mileage is 27.7 MPG.  I didn't start keeping detailed notes until early 2008.  My mileage info from before then was extrapolated from the 2+ years of data I did collect.  Here is a plot showing my mileage & the price of gas versus time.  Gas prices are a roller-coaster for sure, but people in the US still have nothing to complain about.  Normal gas prices in Europe were higher in 1998 than peak US prices in 2008!

Monthly Costs
Gas $ per month: $119
Maintenance+Mods $ per month: $113
Insurance $ per month: $77
Total per month, excluding purchase price: $308
Total per month, including purchase price: $345

Annual Costs
Total annual cost, excluding purchase price: $3700
Total annual cost, including purchase price: $4145

Cost per Mile
Gas alone: $0.11
Maint+Mods alone: $0.11
Gas+Maint+Mods: $0.22
Insurance alone: $0.07
Total per mile, excluding purchase price: $0.29
Total per mile, including purchase price: $0.32

Although I didn't keep detailed records like you, I don't think my total cost anywhere near as much as you spent. I also drive a lot fewer miles. Its amazing how quickly price per gallon went from $4.77 to $2 in 2008. That was a crazy year.

Perhaps.  I would say that I spent at least $2000 on mods & unnecessary stuff.  Before doing any of this, I had estimated that I spent $8-10k on the car in purchase price & maintenance+mods alone.  It turns out that I spent less.

Remember, the $18k number includes gas & insurance.  Figure out how many miles you have put on the car, estimate your average MPG and guess at the average gas price you have paid.  Gas costs add up.

Here was a little comparison I did on BFc between my car & my GF's.
Purchase price has so much to do with the cost of ownership.  If you amortize it all out, a new car can be really good, or really bad financially.  It depends on what you get, and MAINLY on how long you drive it for.  Now, if you cannot do your own maintenance then shop fees can start to kill you with a used car, especially an E30.  Also, I totally understand that some people would prefer to have a new car that doesn't require any really serious maintenance for a very long time.  Based upon what I have seen of some new cars though, you still get murdered by regular service stuff that you have to do under the threat of losing your warranty.

By comparison, my GF bought a new Civic LX in 2003.  It was partially financed, and the sticker price was $15000.  It is all paid off now, and since she had a pretty good interest rate, I think that the total cost came out to like $17000.  Her insurance is $1000/year, and at 6.5 years that's $6500.  I would estimate that she has spent $1000 in maintenance...it is a good little car.  Total mileage is 130k, and with her driving I estimate she pulls 33mpg in her commute.  That makes for 3940 gallons of regular gas at an average of say $2.60.  That is a total of $10244 in gas.

Total expenses: $17000 + 6500 + 1000 + 10244 = $33744
Length of ownership: 6.5 years
Cost per mile with gas + maint only: $0.09 ($0.22 for 318iS)
Cost per mile, including everything: $0.27 ($0.32 for 318iS)
Annual operating cost excluding purchase price: $2576 ($3700 for 318iS)
Annual operating cost including purchase price: $5191 ($4145 for 318iS)

So, excluding the purchase price, her Civic costs way less to maintain & operate.  If we had both purchased our respective cars on the same day, and our annual costs including purchase price remained constant (purchase price at start, annual op cost excluding it: me $3700, her $2576), it would take 13.3 years for me to have spent as much money, cumulatively.  It turns out that we recently moved, and her commute is like 1/4 of what it used to be, so her op costs are a lot less now lol.

Anyway, it is not really too surprising that an old BMW costs ~30% more to operate, excluding the purchase price.  Granted, my maintenance costs would be like half if I hadn't modded stuff & reupholstered it.  Still, an older car, even one that is a money dump, seems pretty darn economical.  Very few people hold on to a car for more than 5 years, let alone 13.

If you had to pay for repairs and rental cars, for BMW downtime, how much would it cost??  The new Honda is way cheaper. Plus it will run across country, without a chase vehicle. I still dont like Hondas(cars), but respect the engineering and results.
The E 30/ M 42 is a great car, but not a good car. Not a car for anyone that cant fix it themselves.
We have a glass on wine for every week that the 318 doesnt do something odd.  My Wife loves it, drives the same as her 2002, only not as fast.
I had to work for a Peugeot dealer for two years. He more or less gave away the cars so that the shop could make $ on the service. As no one else could fix them, or even change the oil, he did very well.  .02$   MM

Man, if you had to pay for repairs and were meticulous about keeping the car clean, you would be spending at least twice as much on maintenance.  If I couldn't do my own work, I would have rid myself of the car long ago.

Hondas are great cars in terms of what they were built for.  The civic was made for fuel economy & low cost of ownership, and it does that very well.  Last time I went to Yosemite with my GF, we pulled ~41MPG.  That was with ME driving, and I drive her car a lot harder than she does.  I filled up just as we left, and when I filled it up next it only took 10.1 gallons of regular...410 miles later.  That, and the fact that she never has to spend any time fixing anything.  Even still, factoring in the purchase price changes the story yet again.  I hate how it handles (or doesn't, rather) & it is a little sluggish, but my car isn't much faster in the straights.  The corners are the only place I still feel like I love my car lol.  If I wasn't working so hard on saving a down-payment for a house, I would get an additional car & only use the 318 for fun, or maybe just sell it.

Man, I am trying to LOWER my average monthly maint/mod cost...and I just bought parts to totally overhaul the fuel system.  High capacity fuel pump, Mustang Injectors (which will be cleaned & measured at $20 each), new fuel lines, new FPR...this thing is worse than bloody heroine.  Add to that the custom sound deadening & thermal barrier I still need to install on my hood & the sunroof carrier rebuild I am doing later this week...god help me.

Interesting. I keep records to about the same degree that you do but use a trusted indy for most things beyond routine maintenance, mostly because I don't have much time for wrenching myself.  Without going into excruciating detail, my costs are as follows:

4/2008 to 4/2009

Maintenance & Repair   $5,244.36
Fuel                           $2,137.98
Insurance                   $1,016.00
Total cost                   $8,398.34
Miles Driven                      16,664
Cost/mile                       $0.50

4/2009 to 4/2010
Maintenance & Repair    $1,949.13
Fuel                            $2,152.74
Insurance                    $1,016.00
Total cost                    $5,117.87
Miles Driven                      18,667
Cost/mile                      $0.27

I've owned the car for 24.5 months and I don't mind spending the $ as long as I can schedule maintenance and repairs and the car goes in and out of the shop under her own steam. It's been stone reliable and looks very nice for a 20 year old car, having been generally well cared for since birth (I have records back to 10/1991 totaling >$20K in maintenance and repairs).

Next up for the car: Tires, some fluid changes, and some minor body work.

I figure that I'm not paying interest on a note (if you pay 7.5% on a $15K note over 4 yrs, you'll lay out $2400 in interest) my depreciation is MUCH less than that for a new car, and I like the car, so I'm happy.

I don't generally consider a DD to be an appreciating investment anyway...
