Upper Starter Bolt - Stripped Head
« on: March 28, 2010, 07:57:20 PM »
I'm replacing the clutch on my E30 318is and I have all of the trans bolts broken free except for one - the upper starter bolt.  The clutch was replaced once before and the shoemakers who did it stripped the heads on most of the bolts.  I used lots of liquid wrench on the bolts and I was able to get enough bite on all of them except the upper starter bolt.  I can use a wrench to turn it with the nut on the front but the head is badly stripped and I can't get a grip on it.  I'm going to try vice grips next.

I guess if vice grips don't work, I'll have to take the intake manifold off and cut the nut off.  Or grind the head of the bolt off.  But neither of these seems like much fun.

So my question is ... are there any options that I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance
Mark
