[FOUND] Low-mile M42 wanted in Massachusetts
« on: March 28, 2010, 06:35:29 AM »
I'm interested in finding a "low-mile" (< 140,000 miles) M42 around Boston.  My pistons and intake valves had an unfortunate encounter and I'm investigating the possibility of replacing the entire engine.  I'd like to spend $500 or less for a complete engine, minus accessories (alternator, P/S pump, etc.).  I'd also like to be able to hear it run.

I'm not ready to commit just yet (still researching options, hence the feeler). I also don't know if my price range is unreasonable.  Please educate me. :)

One member had a motor, looks like he wants about $600.  It said over 200K but i think he may have done some work to the motor.  Might be worth looking into.

I haven't bought it just yet (this weekend, hopefully), but it's an M42 from a '91 318is previously owned by FredK from r3vlimited.  He sold it to someone who never used it.  145k miles and quiet, according to Fred.  I'm leaning towards just plopping it in my car, checking the cam sprockets, and doing nothing else if it all looks and sounds ok.

Thats probably your easiest solution.  Then keep your old motor around and maybe eventually build it up for a FI build or something.  Or just spare parts :D

Looks like my seller flaked. Still looking for a lower-mile (sub-160k?) engine within a few hours of Boston.

I know, Josh, and we've emailed. :) It's just that WV is a 10+ hour drive from Boston. I'd end up spending a few hundred dollars just on gas.  I'm not sure shipping'd be any cheaper.

Sounds like romrog318is has a pretty good motor.  If the timing components are all newer... what else really goes wrong?  I'd see about having it shipped :)
