Running Rich :(
« on: March 18, 2010, 03:13:24 PM »
Hi there guys it’s been a long time and yet another few problems lol

Rite it’s a standard E30 1.8IS with:

Problem 1- Running rich: when car is switched on and is at normal temp (half way on the temp gauge) a strong smell of petrol coming from the exhaust and slightly from the engine bay area.

Lastly

Problem 2- engine hunting: when engine is switched on and it is idling at 850rpm she sounds as if though she is loosing air and is struggling to breath, Although the rev needle dose not fluctuate up or down. It remains at 850rpm.

All help & is much appreciated guys
Many thanks
Jazz

Check your sparkplugs for petrol smell behind the car. As for the smell of petrol in the engine bay check if you have any injector leaking or the two short fuel lines that connect the fuel injection tube to the metallic fuel lines, and also the one below. No15 and 16 on the diagram below:

I'm assuming you checked your fuel lines running off the tank.  The lines back there get cracked & weep a little.  Also check the hard lines...I had one that a pebble ate through and it'd leak.  Both pretty cheap & easy fixes.

BTW, OEM BMW metric high pressure 8x12mm line lasts so much longer that it's worth paying the $5/meter at a dealer.

Look closely for some vac leaks too, especially in that rat's nest of lines under the intake.  The ICV has need known to fail pretty often too.  They'll make the car run pig rich.

What he said about vacuum leaks and the ICV. When I first had mine the smell of fuel would be strong enough that I thought there must be a fountain of gas somewhere. Fixed the leaks and replaced the ICV and haven't had a problem since.
