In most cases the chip inside will have individual part numbers (software version) on the label of the chip. the "SAFE" thing to do is buy a 175 ecu from a car that was sold in the USA that has the original chip in it. If you simply just find a chip from a 175 and try to put it in the DME the chip could have a checksum that processor was never programed for and the car will toss a CEL but still drive fine

Hope this helps

I plan on buying an 175 ECU w/ a stock chip.  But when I bought my car, I thought that was what I was getting.  But the PO swapped out the chip.  The same thing could be true with another 175 ECU I buy-even one from the US.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something, but since you have in your possession four reversions of the stock chip for the 175 ECU, can't you just tell me what the software version is for the US chip from the label of the one you have?

I can't remember witch one is from the USA. A simple visual inspection of the case will tell you if its been tampered and opened since factory release. If you buy off ebay be sure to ask the seller . GOOD LUCK!

So there are different versions of the 175 ecu chip, for an e30 M42 powered car?

And there are different ecu's for the E30 M42? Can somebody give me some details please?

There's a simple solution to all this... buy a nice 91 or 93 octane mark d chip and forget about the stocker! :D
1991 318is (Sold to brother :()
1995 530i (Daily driver til I find another 318is!)
