Stock chip for ECU
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:18:42 PM »
I have an American 1991 318is.  The PO sold me the car with the Dinan chip and kept the stock chip.  I would like to buy a backup ECU that contains the stock chip.  Are all the stock chips the same in an ECU that ends in 175?  If not, does anyone know the number of the stock chip I need?  Thanks!

There is many reversions of the 175 and depending on what checksum is used unless you pinpoint the exact ori file you could hold on a check engine light but car will drive fine. The best thing to do is get a used ecu with the stock chip allready there like 4banger is offering . good luck!@

Really?  There are many reversions?  Name seven of them...  I'm trying to get a used ecu with the stock chip in it.  I stated so in my initial post.  And you tell me, "just by it from 4banger.  Case closed."  If that were the only point of this thread, I would have posted it in the WTB forum, you pinhead.  But I didn't.  I posted it here.  And why?  Because I could not find the information that would fill the gap in my understanding of this topic.

Carguy,  I appreciate you injecting FACTS (got that, bmwconnect, FACTS) into this thread.  I am aware of the car model vs part # list on pelican parts.  I am aware that I need an ECU ending in 175.  What I don't know is whether every ECU 175 was manufactured using the same chip.  Is the chip the same for a 1991 318i vs 318is vs 318ic?  Is the chip the same whether the car was manufactured for the states or Europe?

I believe these to be legitimate questions.  What I'd like to know, is if anyone has the answer.  Peace.

The safe idea is finding a 175 ecu with the original chip inside

strike one.

you can swap any and every 175 chip. done it 50+ times within the same chassis. i have tried never crossed e30 to e36 so i don't know the end result in that scenario.

listen, I can make you look purity silly when it comes to anything to do with ecus. the 175 has about 8 versions and all tailoring to emission standards and fuel grades in what ever country the car is sold in. general rule of thumb is if you find a donor ecu from USA and your car was sold in USA it will be safe to swap in a 175 even with a different chip software as the tune would vary slightly

Be my guest with your ECU's. There is no such thing in a BMW. They are DME's. He's in the USA. They are all the same and interchangeable here within the same chassis. With your knowledge, you should know that. There was no inquiry into foreign DME chips.

For the record, I have never called into question whether 4 banger "know his stuff."   I have never stated anything that could be construed as deriding 4banger's knowledge on anything.

In regards to the four reversions you have, is there anyway to distinguish between them based on physical appearance?  In other words, is the only difference between them the electronic data they contain?

I wish the various chips had individual part numbers...

In the industry, DME is often referred to as the Engine Control Unit (ECU), under the heading of Electronic Engine Management Systems. BMW also uses the term DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics) for diesel engine models instead of DME.

In most cases the chip inside will have individual part numbers (software version) on the label of the chip. the "SAFE" thing to do is buy a 175 ecu from a car that was sold in the USA that has the original chip in it. If you simply just find a chip from a 175 and try to put it in the DME the chip could have a checksum that processor was never programed for and the car will toss a CEL but still drive fine

Hope this helps
