Checking Crankshaft endplay
« on: March 11, 2010, 03:07:37 AM »
Hi everyone, I have a 92 318is. I'm in the process of rebuilding my M42, I have disassembled everything down to the bare block but i didn't check my crankshaft endplay. All my main bearings seems fine(minimal wear, no scoring).

So my question is should i reassemble my crankshaft, main bearings and torque the crank pulley bolt to spec and check the crank endplay? Or it is necessary to also reinstall the connecting rod along with the flywheel to check it. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Set the crank on the bearings with the thrust bearings in place, pry the crank end to end and measure travel with a dial indicater .
Sounds as tho you need a good book and maybe should find someone to help you along, IMHO. MM
