I Have been spamming uncontrolably...
« on: March 04, 2010, 05:40:48 PM »
...and would like to appologise to everyone that has recieved that junk.

I am taking steps to wipe out the malware on my computer right now, however i have been in panama without my laptop for the last month and was unaware this was happening.

I currently run avg 9.0 but apparently its not working.  A couple of you have sent me links to fix this problem, but the links are dead. Can someone send me a current link for this fix? I need to get rid of avg, scan my system, and be able to delete this crap and then throw up the defenses again.  Im declaring neuclear holocaust on malware in my compter.

what are the BEST free programs i can use to wipe out and prevent this further?

once again. im sorry for inadvertantly spamming you guys. i appreciate the help on this forum and dont wanna be banned.

I didn't get spammed from you.  I've used Avert in the past, seems OK.  You can also ignore it and use the free HouseCall scanner from TrendMicro.  IIRC it's a web app, so if you're hijacked it'll likely block that site.

My favorite free scanners are MalwareBytes and ASquared.  Both free, both great packages.

AVG is pretty good, no anti-virus is perfect. NONE.
I personally like Avast, but I put AVG on hundreds of customer computers.

As for extra protection and removal... (I use all of these on my own and customers computers, all are good, and all are safe).
These are good alongside a good anti-virus.
Ad_Aware http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/
Protects you from popup and banner based crap.
Spybot Search & Destroy  http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/
Protects and removes a lot of trojans.
Super Anti-Spyware  http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
Same as Spybot, You can use both or just one.

For removal:
Malwarebytes is good.

Keep in mind, if you get a serious infection, curing it can damage Windows and require a re-install.

People often blame anti-virus for crashing their computer when in reality, it removed the virus like it was supposed to. Things were just too badly damaged. It's a no win situation, so they force you into a position to need professional help.

Yep.  I agree.  I typically rebuild every Windows box I have about once a year.  I've only done the Mac a few times; haven't used Mint long enough to rebuild it.

It also clears out all the crap I tend to install, and gives me a great backup to have in case things go wrong.  I use Miray to copy the drive into an image file so I can restore the old computer if necessary.  Hard drive space is so cheap these days, it's a crime not to have a recent backup or two just in case.

+1 for Malwarebytes.  I just successfully removed a fake rogue antivirus software (Vista Internet Security 2010) using it and a registry edit file that I got on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com.  The bleepingcomputer website guy provided detailed simple instructions that even a non-geek like myself could follow.

Jesus are you guys serious? I've run both windows and osx for years, and in the past 15 years I've only had a virus twice on windows. One was Noint, in 1994. It's about the most harmless virus ever, and the other was totally my fault, I won't get into details, but safe browsing and good antivirus will keep viruses away.

What are you guys doing that you keep getting viruses?

I don't get viruses but I like a fresh format, I like to mess and modify with anything I can get my hands, my computers being one of those things

What are you guys doing that you keep getting viruses?

Honestly, you have a very ignorant attitude about the realities of the internet today.

Viruses compose a VERY, VERY small threat today, the real threat is trojans.
Facebook, Myspace, Yahoo, and many other legitimate sites have been known to hand these out on accident. Energizer batteries USB charger was just found to be shipping with a trojan.

Worse though, is that Mac users think they are impervious. Sorry, but there are quite a few trojans for them as well. Not even Linux is safe. If you are on the internet, you need protection.

Most people don't know they have trojans, adware or even a virus because their head is stuck in the sand and never check. How do you know you have nothing if you have no way of knowing? Not every one of them will bring your system to it's knees. The VERY best anti-virus can't do more than about 80% of what is in the wild. Protection is all re-active, not pro-active. It will take less than a few minutes for the next huge virus to spread world wide, if your anti-virus updates once per day, you do the math.

If your Windows system has been online more than 6 months, I can pretty much GUARANTEE you I can find something on it (trojan, virus, or adware, most likely adware AND a few trojans). That is, unless you have some seriously robust protection and a good head about what is safe and what isn't, and no Norton Internet Suite isn't that robust. 3 months if you have kids. 1 day if you are a bitchy office manager who thinks she can do anything she wants on a company computer safely. Unless you work in the industry, the odds of you knowing what is and isn't safe and what is a truly robust protection system (not suite) are pretty slim.

download Kaspersky trial, set to deep scan, and wait. keep it for scanning what you download off torrents or just uninstall after wards. might seem pointless.. but it is generally the best 'av' and its easy to do

it doesn't matter that much if the trial runs out the full version is the same thing but with updates several times a day for 1 year. they have a security suite now combining anti-virus with url advisers and such which work like  "web of trust".. which is nice but it isn't a real firewall.

in the long run switch to ubuntu 9.10
everything is free, more fun, less of a headache (well.. a different kind of headache at least)
games are doable with enough testing or you can always dual boot

be sure to utilize those firefox add-ons such as
-ad blocker
-no script
-wot
