4th gear gone?
« on: August 23, 2006, 06:56:40 PM »
I just got my old 318is back from my brother and I realized that it won't go into 4th gear without grinding. I haven't tried to make it stay in 4th because of the grinding. Opinions? Thanks -

im confused, does it not pop in at all? like even if the car is still?
ya to diagnose if ur synchros are dead id double clutch too but tahts a downshift, you get grinding when tryin to shift up right?

try starting off in 4th (down a big hill ofcourse)

Double clutching works to get it into gear and it goes fine once it is in gear. I drove the car to get a pizzqa the other night and if I depress the clutch at the appropriate rmp for a 4th gear shift and blip the throtttle, then shift, it goes in 75% of the time. Do you think it may be low on fluid? I hope this is the cause. It will shift into 4th when not started, so I don't think it is the mounts or anything like that. I am thinking synchros, which sucks. I do have a source for a used transmission for $399, but don't want to spend the time to put it in, not to mention I haven't done anything that complicated and I have zero time because of new baby.....

fluid would be cheap insurance before you go buying new transmissions, get some redline MTL, i recently changed mine to that and my shifts are noticeably smoother.
