318is leaking coolant big from back of timing chain case?!

Hi Folks,

My first post here, new member.

My 93' 318is manual trans with 56,000 miles, (yes 56,000), started leaking big from behind the timing chain case where the head meets the block on the passenger side. If I fill the radiator it will leak out to the level of the head where it meets the block in about 5 minutes. There is no oil in the water, and there is no water in the oil, yet. This just started yesterday.

I have a suspicion but I wanted to check with the M42 experts before I start writing checks or taking large parts off.

Anyone want to make a diagnosis?

This is the infamous M42 timing case profile gasket failure. Coolant travels from the block to the head through a passage behind the timing cover. The gasket that seals this passage is likely blown out. Search it and you'll find the procedure for fixing it. And don't start or drive the car until it's fixed!

Thanks for the reply. That is what I suspected.
Now I need to find a good link on the web for taking the head off and replacing the profile gasket.

Thanks for the link. That car is a 1991 and mine is a 1993. I am hoping that there is not a difference between the m42 engines.

I am a little apprehensive about taking the head off. It is a very complex job.
