Do you have a bench grinder or access to one?

It's one of the easiest tools to make.

You can get it very close with that method, but I need it to be perfect.
I've spent $600+ on my rebuild so far, and don't want to cut corners.

The clamped flat bars are more accurate than the cam lock. Clamp to the side flats. Point them straight up, measure between the with a ruler, and a square.
The crank wheel teeth are 6 degrees. If you are moving your cam timing, keep that crank wheel in mind, not 5 or 6 at the cam. That is twice crank degrees.
All of the race miata timing , retards the intake 5 degrees and picks up 3hp at 6500. I doubt that these engine are much different. The only reason tto advance it at all is for a little more low end. HTH.

Yes. But it was awhile ago and I can't find the tool. Otherwise i'd just give it to you. But I think it was misplaced during the move .

I was able to borrow the factory tool yesterday. Head is on and all the timing pieces are installed.

you can turn the cams with vise grips. and set a straight edge across the rear part of the cams peril to the head. not hard to do at all. its actually faster than messing with the cam locks. thats what we do in the shop most of the time. then bolt your cam gears on make sure the indicator point is lined up. unless you are using adj cam gears then you prob know what your doing and dont need the advice you just asked for.
