trim removal..paint questions

I am getting my e30 painted this weekend.  I have a friend that paints out of a small shop...aka a couple of large storage units.  He does very good work and is going to give me a KILLER price

So...I want to make it as easy as possible for him.  Should I remove the door bump trim or have him just tape over it?  I would say remove as that fits really tight and would probally be better in the long run.

Should I remove any other trim?  window trim?  head lights/grills?  rear tail lights...  

Does the side bumper trim just pull off?  Thats how it is on a 2002...never pulled it on an e30 tho.

What about the window trim?  How does that come off?  


My paint right now is crap....lots of clear coat pealing and very faded.  Pretty excited to have a nice shiny diamond schwartz e30.  Now it will make my worn basketweaves with gold center caps look bad.

I will be taking before and after pictures and maybe some during as well.

its very difficult to get the bumper trim off without breaking the tabs... not impossible me...

Side bump strips are easy to remove-Front and rear wing ones just pop off(carefully using flat blade screwdriver)
door ones have a small nut(10mm?)and then just slide off!

Remove rear quarter glass and all dechrome,grill,headlights,rear lights,aeriel and front/rear windscreens-thats what id do,days work at the most!!!

How do you remove the rear 3/4 window glass and seal?  Is there a writeup or method on this?  

I know it's TOTALLY simple if you have the pop-outs, but these are held in with a rubber gastet surrounded by a metal frame.  I'm not sure how to remove that stuff with out destroying the seal, the headliner, and stuff like that.  :confused:

You have to remove the two nuts holding the qtr. pillar trim first. In realoem #7.

Remove the coat hook and there's an 8 mm nut under it and maybe another one a little lower. #3 pops off. Then you remove the qtr. glass and gasket. All of the trim stays with it. Carefully start at the upper rear corner and working from the inside, flip the rubber gasket to the outside. The headliner just lays under the gasket. Just be careful and use a plastic screwdriver type tool.
To put it back in, slide it to the rear so that the lower rear corner is laying over the body.
Have another person outside to catch the window when it comes out.
I had a glass guy pull the windshield, qtr. windows, and backglass. He did it on a Saturday for $75 cash. Well worth it.

Hmm, not sure I can tell exactly what you are talking about.  I'm familiar with the two nuts behind the trim piece just behind the door.  This is where pictures along with instruction would be very helpful.  

I guess I'll practice this on my parts car first and see how it goes.  If I feel real comfortable with it, I'll do it myself.  If not, I'll have a "professional" do it.  But, to be honest, I have been less satisfied with so-called "professional" work recently and prefer to do everything possible myself.

After the inner trim is off it is easier to see how the quarter glass goes in. The windshield and backglass are easy after the lock strip is removed. It also looks like a trim mldg. in the rubber gasket and has little pieces at the bottom center on the front and the upper corners of the backglass. Lube it good with soapy water but don't use silicone as it's anathema to the repaint process.

Well I pulled all I could without going to crazy

grills
bumper/door molding
lower window trim, at the top of the door
tail lights
roundels
rear trunk spoiler
sunroof seal
front lip spoiler  (will be painting the non iS and the iS spoiler, I will put the non iS on in the winter.)
wipers
little plastic black things where it pulls air in for the blower
windshild washer sprayers
I am sure there is more...

Then I washed it extra good...cleaned all the dirt from seals

Dropped it off at my buddys shop around 2:30pm.  He was pretty excited that I had pulled so much off already.

Should have it done early next week
