Front Brake Recommendations
« on: January 30, 2010, 10:11:38 AM »
I've searched around old posts and got a few ideas.  I have warped front rotors and so I am planning to replace the front pads and rotors... but then the hard question.... which ones?

I've always been a big proponent of OEM BMW pads.  They always just seem to perform perfect.  But they cost a lot!  So I've been looking at some others.  I'd appreciate any recommendations or experiences that people have had...

The pads I've looked at are...

EBC Green or Red (not sure which)
Hawk HPS
Akebono Euro
Axxis Ultimate

My priorities are...
Stopping power
Noise
Brake dust
in that order...

I don't mind extra brake dust if it means better performance.  I seem to have had bad luck with ceramic pads in the past (they never seem to stop good)

Any recommendations on rotors is appreciated also.  I've pretty much decided to just go with Brembo rotors (no slots or drills or anything)  Unless someone has a better solution.

I use porterfields street/race compound and love them. Great in all the areas you listed but not cheap. Maybe around the cost of OEM, but not sure. Hawks seem to be a favorite of BMW e30 enthusiats.

I use Akebonos on my minivans.  Great stopping power, not too much dust.  They are silent on a 3600 pound van...with brakes of a similar size to the e30.  I think they were about $70 for the fronts.  Definitely worth it.

I have EBC greens on the 318i with ATE's funky grooved rotors.  I'd say they were far better than what was on the car, but I'm not sure those were OEM.  They're not too dusty either, nearly silent.  I bought them used, so they were already broken in.  Not sure of price.
