Here! I have some Questions for all of you.
« on: January 23, 2010, 10:13:06 PM »
does anyone know if a 6 cylinder engine will fit in or replace a 4 cylinder engine on a 318is, I figure there will be some modifications but does anyone know if this is possible,

and does anyone have complete exhaust diagram for a 318is 92.
i just found out that the guy before me fucken welded up a exhaust from a different car, from the y pipe down.

if some one has my model of car, if possible can you make a legible diagram of the exhaust.

how do you turn off the SRS light too? it flashes for ten minutes after the car is turned on then it stays lite up

Sure its possible.... But why would you want to get rid of the awesomeness that is the M42? :)    Also, the amount of modification etc required will depend on which motor you are planning to install.  In 92, i thought the 325i had the M50 non-vanos motor, which if I understand right.. is a somewhat harder motor to find since it was only used that one year.  I'd think that any M50, M50tu, or M52 would fit.  You'll likely need everything though, engine, transmission, exhaust, possibly driveshaft and rear end and the electronics (harness, dme etc) A wrecked donor car would be nice.  You shouldn't have to do any frame modifications etc.  I would assume that the motor mount points are the same, just different motor mount arms etc depending on the motor.

Oh and for an exhaust diagram...

i understand were your coming from about the swap it seems that there almost no hope for moddin this engine but dont get me wrong there are times when the car can seem fun (anytime over 3600 rpms) but the power is just not enough....for me atleast

Exhausts are "bend to fit" :) dought anyone bothered to make a blueprint.

Its why I go to an exhaust shop, too much work without a bender and the lift and special tools.

There is a lot of hope for this engine...a stand-alone & FI or DASC can make it do anything you'd like.  It's the weight that's the kicker...an M52 is what, 100lbs heavier?  On the front end?  I'd hate to think what an M30 or M70 would do to the car's handling!

With some careful tweaking and the right diff, tires, etc, this car can do surprising things.  Let's compare a '91 iS with an e36 M3:
e30 weighs 2600 pounds, has 140hp.  About 19lb/hp.
e36 weighs 3300 pounds, has 240hp.  About 13lb/hp.

Seems dramatic, doesn't it...but let's add a DASC & trim a few pounds of  trunk insulation on the e30...
e30 still weighs 2600 pounds, now has 200hp.  13lb/hp.  It'll probably still get >20mpg conbined, even with the way I drive. :D

You get the idea.  Each foot-pound you squeeze out of the M42 is worth 15% more on our little motor, not to mention far livelier handling & braking...the car isn't for everyone but you can't deny your bang for the buck!

or leave the trunk insulation in and drop the aux fan, mechanical fan, and power steering. I didn't weigh it but I think the COP kit also saved a little weight, at least put it lower to the ground. All weight off the front. Adding the DASC without dropping weight from the front kind of negates the 4/6 weight difference.

i have a tig and mig machine, i can buy the pre bent pipe from sources.
but its expensive, the problem is i dont want to fork out the cash to have a whole new exhaust done.  because the Whole thing would have to be replaced.
i just need to know how long the straight pipe is until it bends and then what degree does it bend

yes it is very possible in the E36 its basically a complete bolt up..
i have an E30 that im putting a 328is motor in

jusr make sure you have the break booster from whatever car the motor will be comming from
and as for exhaust if your looking to do a swap just get a header and go with a custom exhaust from a local exhaust shop
to do my exhaust from header back to muffler with 2.5" pipe all custom bent and fitted with a warrenty costs only $88
do a little research on it

also what motor are you trying to use?
M50B25TU
M50B25
S50B30
M52B25
M52B28tu
M52b28
S52B32

which one of these motors are you looking to use?
i would recomend the M52B28 if your looking to boost later on
but if you looking for NA power i would suggest the S52B32 and get some cams OBDI intake manifold etc
but for all the 96 and newer motors you will need to OBDI swap everything..
good luck

but yes it will throw the handling off a bit but not TOO much
in the E36 it throws it off pretty bad unless you go with an M3 suspension setup...
