Chain guide failures...from synthetic oil?
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:12:24 PM »
I was just over at Wikipedia reading the entry for synthetic motor oil.  I was trying to find out exactly which 'synthetics' were real group IV PAO synthetics and which were the blended group III dino oils.

Seems like almost all of them are group III.  No biggie for motor oil IMHO, but I'm looking for gear oils that are the lowest possible friction.  Then I see this little note under 'Disadvantages':
Quote
Potential stress cracking of plastic components like POM (polyoxymethylene) in the presence of PAOs (polyalphaolefins).

I thought no big deal, right?  Then I find that the traded name for POM is Delrin.  Does anyone know if the cam chain tensioner rails are Delrin?  Maybe we have an easy way to keep those rails from cracking?

I'd assume that this isn't the solution, but I'm interested in who's been running synthetics & had trouble with the rails.  Or alternatively, who's run dino oil & had no trouble?  Anyone car to share?

Interesting. Ive only run non synthetic oil in my engine, I was thinking about switching to Mobil 1 or another synthetic, just haven't done so yet.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what people have to say.

BTW, 150,000 miles no major issues.

I'm 99% sure they're not delrin... just from the feel of them.
