Hey guys...New to M42Club from BF !

My previous M42 experience was a major FAIL and being a glutton for punishment I picked up this really clean '95 318is for cheap. Interior/exterior are perfect but engine is toast ! Even though it was well maintained for 250K it hung a rod out the side of the block. This really sucks cause you couldnt spin the engine to remove the torque converter bolts and split the tranny. I do have two engines that I plan to combine to make one good one and use it for my daily driver.

I removed the head and was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't very much damage besides a few bent valves.

After I removed the head I thought Id try to get the broken rod back inside the engine where it belongs. A few hits with the BFH and I opened the hole up enough to get the rod back on the crank. That allowed me to turn it over and access the torque converter bolts. The rest was gravy with the exception of the water pump. Knock sensors were also FUBAR.

Update...Well it seems that parts to rebuild another 1.8L was going to run about $953 plus machine work. So it really didnt make sense to me to do that especially with 250K miles on the ATX tranny. That would be a serious FAIL to rebuild the 4 banger and the tranny be shot.

With all that said I found a 78K mile M50/tranny/harness/ecu for $750 from a fellow BMW guy.
I drove 400 miles round trip today and now it is in my shop awaiting transplant.

You should post the engine scraps on the board classifieds along with your location. Good heads are worth some cash here...Sorry to hear that you won't be keeping the M42...but $1K for 140HP < $750 for 180...good luck with the transplant. Post some pics!
