Gauge cluster wont work...ne suggestions?
« on: January 10, 2010, 05:16:33 PM »
I'm currently rebuilding a 92' 318i and I can't get the gauges to work. Idiot lights function but none of the gauges will move. Fuses are good and the cluster is getting power. Any body encounter something similar?

I've heard about bad ground nuts on e30 coolant & temp gauges.  I also had an e34 with bad capacitors that killed all the gauges.  I'm not sure which one the e36 cluster is more like.  I think parts might swap between these three cars, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

maybe the solder is cracker also?  the early e30 cars had problems with the solder on the boards cracking with age.  i just reflowed and never had issues again.

this is on an older cluster though,  i have never had issues on a newer cluster (87 on)
