going bye real oem . com the e30 and e36 with the m42 engines appear to have different sumps. hear is two pics from real oem.

both share the same gasket to the block but does anyone know if they are interchangeable?

interchangeable??? U can't use E30 sump on the E36 and vice versa. Why? bcos of the different location of the cross member or subframe in both chassis.

are. should have said. the engine is not going in a bmw it is for a seven style car i am building. space frame so no crossmember no problem.
the problem seems to be in the location of the oil pickup and wot ever parts 9 and 10 are in this linkeys. i  believe the oil pickup is easily rerouted but i have no clue on parts 9 and 10...?

The e36 oil pan has the oil pick up tube built into it so even though the sump is at the back the oil pump in can remain in the same spot on the block. look at post #10 in this thread.

thanks man.

i am pritey shaw that not in a bmw i can use the e36 sump on my e30 engion. just looking for a sump and oil pick up.
