Anyone have a recommendations for a diagnostic/scanner tool that will work for my 1991 318is, I'm hoping some of you have used one that is worth the money, thanks

Just use the search feature and look for "stomp test" no need to purchase a tool as this accomplishes the same thing.

Yep - the stomp test is the way to go.

I bought a cheap Chinese code reader with a BMW plug for about $40 for the later 96+ OBD2 BMWs.  Our e30's are "OBD0", but at least they have the check engine light.

Ran the Stomp test and I think it's telling me 1223, however it continues to repeat this over and over and over without stopping ????? is that normal. Also some have told me that the 02 sensor may be bad. I disconnected it and ran the car for a few minutes, re connected it and did the Stomp test drill again, it still only gave me the 1223 code ??? any thoughts, thanks

The one thing a real tester will show is live engine data (On most OBD1 ECU's)
that can help troubleshoot issues.

Take the 02 into a Autozone and let them test it? If the O2 has more than 50 or 60 K on it the car might even run better. I just buy them from a local auto supply, since I'm OBD1 and the one that comes in the box is a Bosche sensor with the same markings as the one the dealer sells....

My 95 had a constatn O2 code that was caused by teh Meter to throttle body boot having a hole in it... a very very small hole.

Yeah, it's supposed to flash continually until you turn the key off, that's normal.  1223 is a coolant sensor, here's a great codes page if you need it.

Grab the right year electrical troubleshooting manual (ETM) here.

You have two coolant temp sensors on the head...the brown one is for the gauge, the blue one is the one you have to test.

Not to toot my own horn, but there is another version of the ETM for the E30 that I have up on mediafire that is more complete than the one posted above.

Get them all!  You can never have enough troubleshooting manuals.

Anyone ever found an electrical copy of the e30 or e36 Bentley?
