Sputter after higher rpm driving
« on: December 22, 2009, 01:53:06 AM »
Okay, so my engine now has 218,000miles on it. I'm getting about 350 miles to the tank, mixed highway/city driving. My heat works, as does the ac.  But after I drive for an extended period of time on the freeway(65-90mph) my car will make a sputtering noise at speed, and as I'm at a stop. It goes away a bit as I'm driving but come back to a stop and it's loud as it was when I was getting off the freeway.  Any idea what it can be? Timing chain/tensioner?

whats the year and model of your car,

your can try doing a stomp test and see what codes come out,

take the key put into ignition and then turn all the way just to where it wont start press gas pedal down 5 times  engine light will blink and pause for half a second then it will start blinking out numbers, like say it will blink, blink pause blink pause blink pause blink blink

that means 2112

the codes only come out in four digits soo there is no way to get any 5 or 6 digit codes

after you have the code go to this web site

http://www.scribd.com/doc/12801540/Bmw-Motronic-Codes

and see what the code represents, you also should check air filter and spark plugs, and try putting some fuel injector cleaner in your car, before you fill it up agian, SeaFoam is the best but its $10 a bottle

also in really old cat converters the shit thats inside them will crumble up and form into a wall of crud, you might wanna check on that

depending on the year of your car the stomp test might not work for you
1989-94 are equipped with this feature

Yeah, i'll give the recording a shot. nothing looks visually out of place, so I'll just record a sound clip and get it up on youtube.

yeah it sounds like you just need to tune it up, spark plugs oil change air and fuel filter, ect,

like i said it could tho be the cat, i use to have this 91 honda accord and the catilitic converter the saramic or porsilin or what ever is in them, broke all up inside it and when i drove the car in high speeds it would spudder and bogg down,  when the exhaust is pushing out alot of compression it moves all the broken pieces and clogs the exhaust, if you dont have to do a E check where you live then you can cut the cat out and weld the pipe back together it'll make your car sound cooler

Talking to a trusted BMW mechanic, he pointed me in the direction of a timing chain tensioner. Thanks for the help.
