My 1990 318IS???
« on: August 12, 2006, 01:05:21 PM »
So I was under the impression that if you look at the born on date on the tag on the driver side door jamb, that, if the date is before June (06) of that year, it is considered that year.. I know that's confusing, i.e., an 05/90 would be 1990, 07/90 would be a 91...

OK so my question is, my 318is is marked 05/90 which confuses me due to the fact that on the title its a 91, and I don't think there was a 318is made in 1990.. my car is odd however,, sunroof delete, no cruise, and the rear windows don't pop out... maybe I'm just a fuggin newb like crazy, but shouldn't the sport model have a few of the finer things in life? I mean my damn 325e's had a sunroof, cruise and rear windows that popped out LOL any information delving in to this would be much appreciated!!

Don't know about the year models. Sport is not synonymous with luxury. There is less insulation and electronic options - a 6 button OBC, no power locks. They are noisier, rougher riding, lower weight , and a few other things that are not usually associated with a "BMW". They are a sport model in the old school definition of the term. So - no decals, bells and whistles, or quick and dirty horsepower increases.
Less power, lighter transmission, driveshaft, and differential. Battery in the trunk for better weight distributiuon, better shocks, different springs and sway bars, 6X14 Basketweaves and those high dollar (in early 90's terms) Michelin MXV's.

I think the vast majority of our cars were built in 90 (mine was, no sunroof, LSD, cruise control, pop out windows, 13 button OBC, etc.) ...usual car-maker model year hocus-pocus math.

The cars were built in 1990 and sold in 1991. Production of a model always starts the year before...or else dealers wouldn't have any in stock (making cars and shipping them from the factory takes time). All US 318is were sold as 1991 models. Mine says 04/90
