Any 318ti owners have buying advice?
« on: December 05, 2009, 03:40:18 PM »
Any specific pitfalls I should be looking out for in a '95 318ti Active?  It has ~220k miles.  Aside from the usual M42 stuff, what breaks?  What is expensive to replace and peculiar to the hatchback?  I'll be posting this over on 318ti.org later today too.

Bad: I'm already aware that the heater is dead & the gas pedal sticks.  The interior is pretty shabby gray leather.  I'm suspecting that the heater valve is stuck & the throttle body needs cleaned or the cable sheath is cracked.  Can I swap my spare e30m42 TB to the e36m42?

Good: Car doesn't appear to overheat, body seems very straight & rust-free.  Were they galvanized at the factory?  The car is also simpler than the e36, especially with the simple e30 rear suspension.

I'm VERY tempted to trade my '89 525iM in on it.  My e34 is in much better shape though, with only 140k miles.  I'm thinking that the 318ti is likely about as quick (unfortunately it's an auto) but probably not as reliable.  I'm also tempted by the purple paint...

The rarity/parts bin/hybrid/Frankenstein e30/e36 nature of the car appeals to me too.  Looks like an upgraded e30 rather than an e36.  Especially the dash...much simpler design than the e36.
