aux fan blows fuses no AC
« on: November 17, 2009, 04:11:02 PM »
been reading on here for awhile, just got a 93' 318i(winter package/LSD) sunday. Im new to bimmers, this is my first. Im an fbody guy.

checking out some of the problems and the AC doesnt work. My understanding is that the AC works off of four fuses, including one that is shared with the aux fan, I think its fuse 41. I put a new one in when first looking at it and it blew the fuse in a sec. the fan never turned on. I got under it, it doesnt turn by hand at all(dont know if its supposed to). should i check the low and high speed relays? should i just replace the aux fan, the car has 160k.

all the other fuses for the AC are not blown. snowflake button lights up. got heat.

Aux fan should turn pretty easily.  The A/C button should put it on high speed, so it won't matter if the resistor is dead or not.  Sounds like it's shot.

If the system is low on freon it won't turn on at all.  I think the button will light up just to show it's pressed...it's not really an indicator, just a button light.  I'm not 100% sure on that.

am I right in assuming that an AC system will not work unless the aux fan is operational? If so, I hope that's the reason the AC doesn't work for me. Good thing I have all winter to figure it out. On a side note, I really enjoy this car, but I wish I could have found an E30 318is close to me. I can see how these are addicting

had someone with small hands reach through the grill and got the  aux fan to spin. it does have some resistence. seems like its catching on something as it goes around.

still need to know if the AC will work with the Aux Fan fuse pulled, if so, I may have a compound issue
