Which sounds better on an M42? Remus or Maganaflow?
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:34:24 PM »
I need to buy a new exhaust muffler soon before my inspection is due the end of December, but I have had so many people tell me that the best sounding mufflers are the Remus or Magnaflow for an M42.  I'm partial to the Remus and it's about $350.00 for a universal exhaust with titanium tips.  The Magnaflow universal street series exhaust is about $192.00.  I have never heard the Magnaflow on an M42, but I have heard it on a 325i E46.  It sounded decent, but I'd like to get your opinions of which you think would probaly sound better.  Remus or Magnaflow exhaust?

The remus sounds better. Have you thought about a supersprint exhaust? They are more expensive, but I have never heard anything but good stories about them. I'm sure theres a youtube clip out there.

I've heard the Supersprint and they are more expensive than both of these.  That's why I'd rather stick with something I know is realiable, sounds good, and not break the bank.  I have to buy a new muffler, because she will not pass inspection as it is now.

I'm buying mine on Ebay, a universal exhaust from Remus.  The universal exhaust are a lot cheaper and it has the dual exhaust pipes instead of the one single pipe made for the 318i/is.  Remus does make an exhaust for the 318is.  You can look on this site and it will tell you which exhaust are made specifically for your vehicle.  Don't forget BMW did not stop producing the 318i with the E36.  They produced it through the E46 in Europe, so check out the E46 316/318i exhaust also.  You will have a lot more choices in exhaust that will fit E30 M42 engines.

I'll take a look and see if there is a logo or text on mine. I can't even remember what it was. The guy asked me what I wanted, and I told him something that sounds close to stock with a nice throaty sound. He pointed at something and said it was one that he put on a V8 (corvette with dual mufflers). It's a high flow exhaust. It sounds better than the stock, no rasp, and much deeper sounding. I would recommend it, but I haven't heard the remus, so I can't compare. :\

If you already bought it, no worries. I wanted to get under there and take a look anyway, now.

You might have a Flowmaster, because that's what most GM enthusiast use.

I have supersprint in mine, and although performance did increase, The muffler is falling apart, and there is some rattling going on in there. The baffles chatter at certain rpms. starting to drive me crazy

I really wanted a supersprint, but I think you have just turned me off. How long did you own the exhaust before it started to fall apart?

My car has the original muffler from when it was built in 1991.  The exhaust pipes are fine and no rust, but there's a small hole in the muffler.  It won't pass inspection in New Jersey with any holes in the muffler.  The Remus mufflers sound awesome on BMW's inline 6 and V8's.  They sound good on the M42 also and they don't have that overbearing and annoying Japanese turner engine sound, but a deep throaty and you better not FU@#$%^&*K with me sound.  Remus makes a lot of applications for the M42.  There's only a few for the E30, but there a tons for the E46 M42 that will fit the E36 and the E30.  They even make the power sound edition that has the dual exhaust sound and look like the new E92.
