It's kind of a pain in the ass, but not terribly hard.
I recommend raising the engine up for the extra clearance you need to get it off. Disconnect the motor mounts from the arms on the engine, jack underneath the edge of the transmission bellhousing (right next to the oil pan, use a piece of wood too).
Check the lower pan for cracks, it finds a lot of things along the road. And you'll want to replace that gasket too while you're at it.
