I'm building a stroker motor that will have a great deal of interesting combinations in it. Here is my take on cams…..I chose a profile that should get me close to what I want without having to weld up the cam. Basically, I cut what is called a 250/250 but for better comparisons, I would recommend looking at duration of lift above 0.050" or greater where flow starts to occur. The cam registers 222* degrees of duration at 0.050" lift versus the Schrick 256's at 215* and the MM 258's at 224* degrees. So, you could say that it is fairly close to MM's 258 cam. With a long duration cam, one would need 11:25 compression and above to extract a decent idle and power up top and since I'm only going 10.9:1, this is why I chose this combo.
One should really look at lift and duration to be related. If you have a lot of lift and no duration, you will have a lobe that looks like an arrowhead. That lobe will beat the heck out of your valvetrain and eventually the cam itself. This cam is similar to what Schrick did, they use a 0.408"(10.36mm) and I used a 0.405"(10.29mm). This is a bit more radical tho as there is more duration at 0.050", 222* versus 215*. So, this cam ends up being perfect for my 10.9:1 compression and for that fact that it doesn't have to be welded up which is a whole other ball game.
When you run this 250/250 combo you should get the most powerband out of the car without having to weld up and nitride the cam. Truth be told, I am not sold on offseting the cam timing as you are going to lose somewhere if you find any gains. I have a strong suspicion that the long duration cams make little power below 4500 which means LOUSY gas mileage and that lots of people are gonna beat you off the line as you try to get past 5K. So, the decision to mate a 250/250 combo to give a very strong low and midrange powerband but yet let you pull strong to about 7500. I suspect the high lift cam pulls to 8000 but I wonder if the power is flat or whether it is still climbing. Long duration, high lift cams seem to pull forever but the car never feels like it is pulling hard but just high, no grunt! This cam set will make it so you don't have to always drive like an a$$hole to feel fast!
I will post once the car is tuned and I have all of the results. It should be interesting to see what my combination of cool parts brings to the table like ITB's. I'm hoping for some great HP but better yet some awesome TQ across the rev range.
Cheers,
