Morning, all. I'm going to start working on swapping a new M42 into my 318is tonight (the intake valves on mine bent due to that bad deflector wheel). I bought a hoist and load leveler from Harbor Freight last weekend. The engine currently in my car has the head removed.
Three questions:
1. do I need to put the head back on in order to remove the engine from the car without the transmission? If not, what do I bolt the chain to, and with what size bolts?
2. the "new" engine is currently hanging from my hoist – sans transmission – with a bit of discarded seat belt (don't ask). It has a head. I see the big loop on the front of the engine, but there are several holes to choose from on the back of the engine. Again, where do I attach the chain for the load leveler?
3. (more out of curiosity) when removing the engine and transmission together, where do you attach the chains?
If it's not obvious, I haven't done this before.
The Bentley manual just says to "remove the engine". :confused: I searched and didn't find a howto (maybe it's too obvious), but I'll write this up when I'm done.
