check your oil plug gasket from the valve cover.

yup.  the two guys above are right.  get a new valve cover gasket.  they are cheap and super easy to replace.

you guys rock! how confident would you say you are that this is the problem, and is there a way to check without taking the cover off?

Hey just to let you know that when you do replace them, make sure you tighten the valve cover bolts correctly. I did and had to remove and retighten a few times over a period of three weeks. I still get a little oil down in the plug well.
