Just curious if there is an online "how to" that shows how to rebuild a BMW rear (LSD or not) - one that has pics and good description/instructions - along w/ a listing of new parts (seals, bearings, etc) needed to do the job right.

Just curious to, is there a site that shows how to convert a non-LSD rear over to an LSD rear when rebuilding by changing or removing the innards - NOT by swapping the entire diff or pumpkins out?

Anyone?

Post #7 includes the various parts for the rebuild and a description of the process. Mind you they are talking about swapping e30 internals into a e36 case, but besides that aspect it is a good starting point. Good luck.

unbolt the axles e12 socket if i remember. unbolt the rear end from the drive shaft and car pull out. then there are either 4 or 6 bolts on each side where the axles go. un do them the ends slide out releasing the lsd or non lsd/aka the part with the ring gear. pull out replace and re bolt new seals aren't a bad idea but not 100 necessary got to be the easiest rear end ive done cause there is no setting it up wrong. no using a micrometer just change the parts out. in my case i busted the section that had the bearings clean off. just changed out ring gears with one i got from the junk yard and put it back together my car is a e36

rebuilding a diff is not something I would recommended without the proper knowledge or tools, you have to re shim the carrier and the pinion after any change to the ring or the pinion it is a very complicated process

You can, however, change bearings and seals.
It takes a press and a bearing puller and
a few bits of pipe. And a new crush sleeve.
And when you're done, bluing the gears is smart.
But it can be done.

It's really not the easiest thing to do, tho,
so unless you're intrepid, I'd find a shop...

no it does not take any special tools or equipment for a e36 rear end or many bmws. its the easiest thing to fix on the dam car
